Professor Nicholas M Odhiambo

Prof Nicholas M Odhiambo holds a PhD (Economics) degree from the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa). His research profile is broad, rich and multifaceted.

During the past +/-20 years, his research has produced a number of papers, which have been published in various local and international journals. Of these publications, more than 350 articles have been published in more than 145 reputable/peer-reviewed/refereed journals. In addition, he has published five (5) books/book chapters. He has also presented more than 30 papers at various international conferences/institutions worldwide.

Prof Odhiambo is currently listed as one of the top authors in the field of economics – both in South Africa, Africa and even internationally. According to RePEc/IDEAS, Prof Odhiambo is currently ranked number two (2) in South Africa and number three (3) in Africa (RePEC/IDEAS).

He is currently the second most-cited and most-read economics author in Africa, according to RePEc/IDEAS (December, 2021), based on the number of Citations, Weighted by the Number of Authors. Internationally, he is currently ranked among the top 1 % of economics authors based on 12 criteria, including Number of Works, Number of Distinct Works, Number of Citations, Number of Downloads, amongst other rankings. He is also currently ranked number 39 worldwide based on the number of publications and 10-year average rank score, amongst other rankings (see https://ideas.repec.org/cgi-bin/rank.cgi?pod33&eSiW-Accessed: December 2021). 

Prof Odhiambo has received numerous awards and research grants from a number of institutions. His University of South Africa (UNISA) awards alone currently exceed ten (10); and they include, amongst others: the 2011 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research; the 2010 UNISA Top Achiever’s Award; the Dean’s Research Award in 2008; and the CEMS Achievers’ Award (2009-2018). Prof Odhiambo has maintained the highest accumulated research output in the College of Economic and Management Sciences (CEMS) since 2007; and in 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2016, he produced the largest number of publication outputs in the entire university.

Prof Odhiambo currently the Editor of the Journal of Economic Policy and Management Issues (JEPMI) – ISSN: 2958-6313. He is also the Associate Editor of: 1) Journal of African Development (Pen State University Press); and 2) Managing Global Transitions (University of Primorska Press). He is also currently a member of International Advisory Board/Editorial Board Member of various internationally recognised journals, including: 1) Journal of African Business (by Taylor & Francis); 2) African Journal of Economic and Management Sciences (by Emerald Publishing Limited); 3) Journal of Economics and Development (by Emerald Publishing Limited); 4) Journal of Developing Areas (by the Tennessee State University College of Business); 5) Economics, Management and Financial Markets (by Addleton Academic Publishers, USA); 6) Journal of Self-Governance and Management Economics (by Addleton Academic Publishers, USA); 7) Heliyon – Business and Economics (by Elsevier); and 8) African Journal of Economic Review (by the Open University of Tanzania), amongst others. He has also served as Guest Editor for the journal Energy Exploration & Exploitation (SAGE), Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure and Events (Taylor & Francis), and Telecommunications Policy (Elsevier). He is also currently serving as the Founding Editor of the UNISA Economic Research Working Paper Serries, which he established in 2014/15.

Professor Odhiambo has served as an external examiner for more than eleven (11) universities, which are located in South Africa, Ghana and Australia. He has also supervised more than 33 postgraduate students at various levels. During the past +/- five years alone, he has produced fourteen (14) doctoral and three (3) Master’s graduates. 

Prof Odhiambo has also been appointed to serve as: 1) a Technical Advisor for a higher education research project at the Financial and Fiscal Commission (FFC) – South Africa; 2) a reviewer for the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), UK; and 3) an external reviewer for senior academic promotions at the University of Minnesota Duluth (USA), Spiru Haret University (Romania), University of Dar Es Salaam, and University of Ghana Business School, amongst others. In 2015, he was appointed as one of the international judges for the 2015 research competition by the International Atlantic Economic Society, Boston, USA. During the same year, he was appointed by the Economic Society of South Africa (ESSA) as the Adjudicator for the ESSA Founders Medal Award for PhD Degree Thesis, a position which he held for three consecutive years. In 2016, he was nominated for the 2016 World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Prize in the field of social sciences. In 2022, he was admitted to the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) as a Fellow.

On the tuition front, Prof Odhiambo has demonstrated exceptional academic leadership at various levels. Prof Odhiambo served as Head of the Economics Department at the University of Fort Hare for about six years, before joining UNISA in 2006. During his tenure at Fort Hare, Prof Odhiambo single-handedly developed a Postgraduate Diploma in Economics. He also spear-headed the re-configuration of both the undergraduate and Honours programmes at Fort Hare. More recently, he actively participated in the re-configuration of Economics honours’ programme at the University of South Africa. 

Prof Odhiambo is currently working as Professor of Economics and Chair/Head of Macroeconomic Policy Analysis (MPA) research flagship programme at the University of South Africa (UNISA) – a programme which he developed in 2012/13.
